Creator of worlds that destroy time.
“We're all conflicted about something we'd rather not show the world. And that’s what writing is about for me; revealing the things we hide, even from ourselves.”
Growing up in a multicultural community in New Orleans, I've often grappled with cultural identity. My mother, a teacher, and my father, a film projectionist, raised me to listen to the stories of others, so that I might better understand my own. Finding common ground in different voices persuaded me to share my words with others through writing.
We’re all conflicted about something we’d rather not show the world. And that’s what writing is about for me; revealing the things we hide, even from ourselves. Duality is a recurring theme in my work, as I wrestle with the same looming shadows of internal and external conflict my characters face. Though shrouded in darkness, my stories often expose light through painstaking catharsis.
Running around a cemetery near my childhood home inspired a penchant for the macabre I so often inflict upon the unsuspecting reader. But rather than tell with gratuitous violence, I show with provocative brevity. Language, setting, and tone lead the narrative to create an unsettling atmosphere; leaving the reader with a lasting echo, haunting them long after the story ends. Through storytelling, I reflect on human nature, exploring the monsters inside of us.
To create is to sacrifice. Creation takes space and immense time. A writer of fictions, I create worlds that destroy time. To learn more about the worlds I create, among other time-consuming projects, subscribe to my monthly newsletter, or contact me at joshuathaddeus.com/contact.
